Wondering about this year’s trends? For 2012, ID ARTIST Michelle Selby recommends different types of plaits:

“Plaiting the hair all the way round the head is a very effective soft, cute style, or braiding the hair to make a fringe at the front can make a look different. The sleek pony tail has been very popular in the salon this season, and high messy buns too.”

  • Michelle Selby’s new Collection – ‘Beyond Bondage’

Bondage has been a major theme on the catwalk this season and the focus of ID ARTIST Michelle Selby’s new hair and clothes designs.

“This is my second collection of 2011 and I love it!” says Michelle about Beyond Bondage, which includes “both smooth and sleek looks as well as wilder hairstyles, with body and texture.”

“The inspiration for this collection was taken from this season’s catwalk, which was very much about the strong, independent woman. There were a lot of buckles and dressy bondage harness accessories and some amazing shapes and textures. I wanted to create a strong dominant feel to this collection where hair buns are wildly exaggerated, but soft in shape. Sleek looks are very strong at the minute and so are braids which give a very controlled look. Strong shapes with bursts of colour were what inspired the colour and cut of this collection.”

  • ID ARTIST – SHRUTY STEPHENSON

This week, we find out what inspires ID ARTIST Shruty Stephenson when interpreting L’Oréal Professionnel’s seasonal looks:

“For inspiration I always look at the L’Oréal season looks, and then interpret them by looking through editorial fashion magazines. I also look at architecture, to create cuts tailor made for my clients, and watch people walking past me on the streets, because sometimes you see really quirky people with their own styles. I then interpret them in my own way.”

Now in her second year of the programme, Shruty tels us what being an ID ARTIST has meant for her career:

“Being part of the ID programme, and being involved in events such as World Skills looks very good on your CV. But not only that; more than anything, it has fuelled my passion for hairdressing, and I want to learn more. Hopefully I will still have more opportunities to work in other events or training with L’Oréal. It has also boosted business in the salon, so much that we are relocating into the centre on a bigger scale.”

  • ID artist shelley manley on the catwalk showcase and the latest trends

ID Artist Shelley Manley shares with us her experience at the Catwalk Showcase and the trends dominating this season’s collections:

“For L’Oréal’s Original Beauty collection I was at the hippodrome in Birmingham for the showcase, which was amazing. We get to research the trends and what fits with the collection then get to create the hair that’s going to be coming through in A/W 2011- 2012.

The trend that really dominated the collections was a mixture of pure, which was really showed in Alexander Mcqueen and wild and free – a woman’s inner strength – which you can see in a lot of the collections. We are also seeing on the catwalks the fetish side and the passion within a woman.”

  • ID ARTIST – MARK IZZARD

“Being part of the I.D. programme has really inspired me both personally and professionally. In my teaching career I have been able to inspire and take education to a new level of creativity and my students really enjoy the sessions I put on for them.”

He continues “In other areas of work outside the college it has given me a lot of opportunities to develop new contacts and further my career in the industry doing events like the Soap Awards 2011 and working in film and theatre as well as working on high profile advertising campaigns.”

  • id artist julie wilson talks about her course

Julie Wilson, a second year ID ARTIST, reveals insights from the course so far.

“I recently attended the A/W11 Colour Collection launch and had a fantastic time. It really was the best to date! I came back feeling enthusiastic and excited to be part of such an amazing team of hairdressers”, says Julie Wilson of Natural hair Company in Lisburn. “One of the guest artists showed us how to create a wild and free style he called ‘40s Glamour and I loved recreating it. I enjoy using tecni art Volume Riche in the salon, so I chose this to add to my model’s hair and double blow-dried it in.”

She explains: “The hairdressing industry is forever changing and getting on the ID ARTIST programme meant so much to me, giving me more self-confidence and ambition. I’ve seen so many changes in my hairdressing career in the past two years, so the next step for me is to be recognized in the industry for my love of hair!”

  • ID Artist Michelle Selby talks about one of this season’s hottest trends: feather hair extensions!

This week, ID Artist Michelle Selby dares us to be different and stand out with new cool hairstyles!

“I have been doing hair feathers, which have proved to be a massive trend for Autumn/Winter. I attach them in the same way as hair extensions are done, without the need for glue or bonds. The feathers can then coloured, permed, straightened and washed. If they are looked after they can last up to three months.
Another hot style this month is the quiff – especially with daring shades like red copper! I think this season, you can dare to be a bit different and really try out some new styles!”

  • ID ARTIST Kelly Cooper tells us about the A/W 2011/2012 key hair trends!

Do you want a cool, fashionable hairstyle? Here is Kelly Cooper’s advice on this season’s latest trends!

“There are two sides to a woman this season, pure and calm and wild and free. Last season we saw a very different style to hair. The texture was matte and almost candy floss like; the bigger the better! There was a distinguishable 70s vibe for Spring / Summer.
This season, we’re seeing sleek, glossy and slick hair rule the catwalk. I loved the glossy ponies seen all over the catwalk, a complete contrast to the looks introduced last season. Neat braids were also seen throughout the shows and are a big trend for Autumn/Winter. Tight braids were clinically braided and tied into sleek low ponytails. Representing the wild and free side of a woman are the more textured braids, left quite loose.”

  • ID Artist

Kim Rance, ID ARTIST, offers her nifty tips for finding fashion inspiration…

“I find one of the best places to find inspiration is museums. I recently visited the V&A museum and I found the whole place incredible. In London there are a lot of ways of getting inspiration without breaking the piggy bank and museums are one of them! If you are a bit of a spend thrift, then the gift shops can be an absolute gem. Many fashion collections are inspired by old artefacts in museums such as the V&A. So forget overpriced vintage shops and hit museum gift shops for original thing…and a more affordable price tag!

Clothing in the V&A gift shop was very much taken from the Tribal trends that are big for A/W 2011. From kaftans to kimonos to feather animal ear-shaped head bands… this was a store that should be extended from the museum to the high street! So don’t feel like you have to stick to the shops to be inspired – try something different!”

  • ID ARTIST – TIPS FOR A FISHTAIL PLAIT

Shauna Crossey, ID ARTIST gives some insider tips on how to do a fishtail plait:

“The fishtail plait is great for both going out and for a casual daytime look! To make it easier to do, simply add some tecni art pli to your hair: this will give it some structure and make it easy to work with. Scrape the hair over to the side, as neatly and tightly as possible, securing it and then wrapping a bit of hair to hide the hair bobble. Plait the hair as normal taking 3 sections like a normal plait. Then start to tease out the edges of the plait, making it bigger and messy looking.”

Very easy and simple to do!
